Dr Karin Elgar
My interest in nutrition goes back to my final years in school when my geography teacher,
rather than teaching us much geography, preferred discussing the benefits of organic farming and a natural wholefood diet. Next to teaching full time he ran a small organic farm and still had enough energy
to walk 7‑8 km to school most days. This left a lasting impression
on me and raised a general interest in healthy natural foods.
This general interest turned to a more clinical interest in how closely our health is related to what we
eat and drink, after experiencing myself how simple dietary changes and a personalised supplement programme can improve health
and well-being. I believe strongly that it is in everyone’s power to maximise
health and vitality through optimum nutrition and lifestyle.
After completing a PhD in physiology and five years in executive jobs in the pharmaceutical and related
industries, I started looking into a career change that would better reflect my personal beliefs. It seemed natural to make my interest in nutrition my profession, and share my experience with others. I therefore started a three year course to become a nutritional therapist at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, from where I graduated with Merit. I am a member of the British Association for Nutritional Therapy.
I currently run clinics at the Body & Mind Therapy Centre in Mossley, Lancashire, the Peak Health Clinic, Glossop, Derbyshire, and in Stalybridge, Cheshire. Telephone consultations can also be arranged.
I also give regular talks and hold workshops, see Corporate Services.
